Indictments Handed Down Against Chief, Former Officers; Wiggins in Charge

Indictments were unsealed today, charging Glynn County Police Chief John Powell and three former GCPD officers with a series of crimes, including Violation of Oath of Office, Making a False Statement, Perjury, Influencing a Witness, and Criminal Attempt to Commit a Felony. Along with Powell, former GCPD employees indicted were David Hassler, David Haney, and Brian Scott. There were twenty charges in all. The DA's office originally sought twenty-one, but one proposed count of Violation of Oath of Office by Haney was not approved by the Grand Jury.

Powell was immediately placed on administrative leave pending the resolution of the charges against him; his duties are being handled in the interim by Glynn EMA Director Jay Wiggins.
