Okefenokee Fire Grows

The West Mims Okeefenokee fire grew by nearly 15,000 acres overnight Tuesday and will continue marching north in the swamp as containment crews monitor 65 miles of fire breaks. At 73,976 acres, the fire was being pushed north yesterday by winds from a Gulf sea breeze and one front of the fire is expected to burn onto Chesser Island by Friday. Also, on Tuesday, an Interagency Hot Shot team from Mesa, Ariz., intentionally burned an area on the west side of the national wildlife refuge next to the Swamp Edge Break, a manmade clearing between the swamp and commercial timberland.
